We set off just after 7.30, and the temperature was perfect. After about a kilometre, we were surprised to find a café open where we could get coffee and a Neapolitana. Afterwards, we had a long climb out of Caborredondo.
We could see the sea, but we weren’t quite at the coast for the first 10 km. There were lots of ascents and descents as we traversed the coastal landscape.
We stopped in the square in Comillas for lunch and then headed out on a long, gradual climb. We entered the Oyambre wetlands and walked past the entrance to Oyambre Beach. It was rammed, with cars and camper vans everywhere.
From here, we climbed over a large headland before dropping down onto another beach. We took off our shoes and walked along the sand. We had a dip in the sea, where there were some strong currents, followed by a beer at a bar behind the beach before walking the final 2 km into San Vicente de la Barquera.
Today was also washing day, so we washed our clothes at a launderette: €7 for the wash and €4 for the dryer. It’s strange, but there is a lot of excitement in having clean clothes when walking a Camino!
Today’s hike was 29 km with 598 metres of elevation gain.
