Day 3: Zubiri to Pamplona

We departed this morning at 7.15 in light rain but it did clear quickly so we didn’t really get wet.

It was an easy day with a gentle descent, though there were some hills along the way.

Last night, we met some lovely Australians—Sue and Kanton from Western Australia—at dinner. Afterwards, I headed out with Lara and Stephen for a beer at a local pub, for just one. It was a great night’s craic, but I was a good pilgrim and made it back in time for lights out at 10:00.
Today we met up with Americans from last night and two men from near Guildford, one of whom was doing it for third time.

The route down the valley was very picturesque in places and the entrance to Pamplona was magnificent with its high medieval city walls, the fortified gate and then into the old town with narrow streets and large  Squares. Pamplona is famous for the running of the bulls In the San Fermin Festival in July,  also there are tributes to Ernest Hemingway who popularised the bull running in one of his books.

Tonight, I’m in a twin room with Stephen—nice to get a break from dorm sleeping.

Tomorrow, we head to Puente la Reina: 24 km with a 500 m climb and supposedly some great vistas ahead.
